Privacy — what the MOBA register keeps about you, and why

Who is responsible for what the register holds?

The Mwiri Old Boys Association keeps this register for the Old Boys of Busoga College Mwiri, and is responsible for it on your behalf. It runs on a platform, Twasoma Fenna, whose company processes the information only on MOBA's instructions. The written agreement between MOBA and the platform company is being put in place; it will be signed by MOBA's president. This page will change when it is.

This notice makes no claim about registration or approval by any authority. When there is something to say, it will be said here.

What do I give when I join?

Your name as the school knew you, and your school nickname if you give one. Your email address. Your phone number, if you give one. The year you left and, if you give it, the year you joined. Your house. Where you live now — a town or a country, if you give it. And the password you choose.

Your password is kept only as a one-way scramble that cannot be turned back into the password. Nobody at the platform or at the association can read it, and it is never sent by email.

We also keep a record that you agreed, with the wording you saw and the date — because agreeing is a fact the register should be able to show.

What does the register keep as I use it?

When you sign in we keep the time, and a one-way scramble of your address and of the network you came from — not the addresses themselves. We keep that for thirty days, to slow down someone guessing passwords. We remember the device you signed in from — a random value in your browser, and only a description such as “Chrome on Android”, never your location — so we can tell you when an unfamiliar device signs in.

A sign-up that is never confirmed is deleted after seven days.

Everything else you add yourself — a photograph, your profession, contact details, a business listing, what you post — is yours to add, change or remove, field by field.

Which cookies does the register use?

Only the ones it cannot work without: one that keeps you signed in; one that recognises your device; a short one that carries the class from a class link through sign-up (a day); and a very short one that remembers where the confirmation email went (half an hour). There are no advertising cookies, no analytics from anyone else, and the pages load nothing from another company's servers.

What can other people see?

Until Old Boys of your year, or a MOBA executive member, confirm you, you are on the register but not yet a verified member: you see the same numbers about your class that anyone can see, and nobody sees your details.

Once you are verified, other verified Old Boys can find you by your name and nickname and see your class and house. Everything else follows the setting you chose for it: your city, or only your country; your profession; your contact details, which are hidden until you open them; your birthday, day and month only — the year is never asked for or kept.

The public sees only counts about a class, and only when there are enough to name nobody. Nobody outside the register sees a name.

Do you sell it, or show it to advertisers?

No. Nothing about you is sold, and nothing about you is shown to an advertiser. There is no advertising on the register.

What will you send me?

One email to confirm your address, once. A link if you forget your password. A notice if an unfamiliar device signs in, if your password changes, or if someone keeps guessing it. These are about the security of your account and cannot be switched off. Later, if you choose, the weekly note about your class and birthdays; that you can slow, change or stop. Every email comes from MOBA's address, and a reply reaches a person.

Can I see, correct or remove what is held about me?

You can correct most of it yourself on your profile. To see all of it, or to have your details removed, write to admin@mwiri.com. There is no button for closing an account or downloading your information yet — that is not built — so until there is, we do it by hand when you ask.

What you wrote into the school's memory — a story, a teacher's subject — is school record, under your name, unless you ask for it to go as well.

How long do you keep it?

While you have an account, until you ask for it to be removed. There is no automatic schedule for closed accounts yet — that is not built. Ordinary backups of the register are kept for a short time and contain what the register held when they were made; a removal is carried into later backups.

Is the register for young people?

No. It is for Old Boys — adults who have left the school. Current students are not on it.
